Creative Work of the Week: The legend of Cyrano de Bergerac inspires three new Armagnacs

The legend of Cyrano de Bergerac lives on in this week’s European Creative Work of the Week winner as Sand Creative takes the crown for its branding of three Cyrano-inspired Armagnacs.

Written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano de Bergerac is based on a real-life character from 17th century France. A soldier and a poet, Cyrano is in love with Roxane but too afraid to admit it so when fellow cadet, Christian, falls for the same woman Cyrano pens love letters with Christian’s name attached and Roxane doesn’t know it’s Cyrano’s words she’s fallen for.

The first two blends – a 25 and 50-year-old – feature Cyrano’s sword within the logo which is written in blackletter style, popular in 17th century France. Cyrano’s poetry runs around the edges of the labels, punctuated by his quill pen.

The third blend, Cyrano Roxane, is positioned differently from the other two but clearly linked by the sword icon. The seal on each bottle shows Cyrano facing away – to hide the nose he was famously ashamed of – buy with a wry smile on his face.
